Helen Flanagan Breaks Down Over Co-Star's Cruel Comment | Mental Health Struggles Revealed (2026)

Helen Flanagan, a beloved figure from Coronation Street, has opened up about a deeply emotional experience in her upcoming autobiography, "Head & Heart: Break-ups, Breakdowns and Being Rosie." Although the book is set to be released on January 29th, early excerpts have shared a poignant moment that left her feeling devastated and in tears, stemming from an unkind remark made by a fellow cast member.

In her candid reflections, the actress, known for her role as Rosie Webster, recounted an incident involving Antony Cotton, who portrays Sean Tully on the show. Flanagan revealed that Cotton made a hurtful joke regarding her medication, saying, "Here comes Helen Flanagan; you hear her rattling before you see her." While he likely intended it as humor, for Flanagan, this comment struck a chord, emphasizing the struggle she faced with her mental health. "I was so broken that I didn’t even respond. Instead, I excused myself to the restroom and cried my heart out," she confessed.

Metro has reached out to both Coronation Street and Antony Cotton's representatives for their thoughts on this situation.

In her autobiography, Flanagan bravely discusses her battle with various mental health issues, including postnatal depression, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). She reflects on the joy she felt when her daughter Matilda was born, stating, "Scott and I were on cloud nine. I immersed myself in motherhood, relishing simple pleasures like strolling with my pram or shopping with Matilda in her carrier. After spending 13 years in the public eye, I finally appreciated a more private life. I was genuinely happy, cherishing my time with my baby while doing ordinary things."

However, it wasn't long before her mental health took a downturn, leading to overwhelming anxiety and intrusive thoughts. Flanagan recalls grappling with irrational fears, believing one of her neighbors was plotting against her. "I concocted this bizarre story that he was involved in drug trafficking, allegedly collaborating with my ex-fiancé, Scott Sinclair, a former player for Manchester City, Chelsea, and Aston Villa," she explained.

Her struggles escalated to the point where she became fixated on germs and found herself unwilling to let anyone touch Matilda, fearing they might transmit something harmful. This intense paranoia even extended to her partner, Scott, at times.

As her mental state further deteriorated, Flanagan experienced violent intrusive thoughts, including distressing images of harming her child. "These thoughts were vivid and often brutal," she stated. "I loved my daughter fiercely; that love made these thoughts all the more agonizing. Whenever I went upstairs, I'd panic, imagining myself throwing Matilda over the banister and watching her fall. Those images were disturbingly clear in my mind."

Helen Flanagan has consistently been open about her mental health challenges. In a recent Instagram post promoting her book, she expressed her hope that by sharing her experiences, she could foster discussions about mental health and help others feel less isolated in their struggles. "Talking about mental health can alleviate feelings of loneliness, and I hope my story brings some laughter too," she shared.

Previously, she admitted to reaching a crisis point, during which she couldn’t manage her work or care for her children. "I felt utterly powerless. Writing down my feelings proved therapeutic, and from that, I aspired to create something positive."

This powerful account not only sheds light on Flanagan's personal battles but also highlights the critical importance of discussing mental health openly. It raises thought-provoking questions: How do we support those around us struggling with their mental health? What should we learn from Flanagan's experience?
