The National Rugby League (NRL) is seeking 'complete control' over the British game if any investment in the Super League is to be successful, according to Super League legend James Graham. Graham, a veteran player with experience in both premier competitions, has weighed in on the ongoing talks between the NRL and Super League, which aim to facilitate Australian investment in the European market.
In a recent interview on Triple M, Graham emphasized the importance of autonomy for the NRL and figures like Peter V'landys in shaping the sport's direction in the northern hemisphere. He criticized the Super League's long-standing governance by self-interest, stating, 'For too long, the administration of the game has been driven by individual interests.'
Graham's comments come as a call for a more selfless approach to decision-making, where the NRL's involvement would bring about positive changes for the sport. He added, 'If the NRL takes over, they will need complete control to make decisions that benefit the game as a whole.'
Furthermore, Graham proposed a strategy for promoting the Super League, suggesting the creation of more TV shows similar to those prevalent in Australia. He highlighted the success of shows like '100% Footy' and 'NRL 360' in growing the sport's popularity and fostering passionate discussions.
Graham pointed out the absence of midweek shows on British terrestrial networks and Sky television, contrasting it with the widespread coverage in Australia. He stated, 'The low-hanging fruit is in the packaging and presentation of the game. We need more midweek shows to engage and grow the audience.'
