Switch 2 Backwards Compatibility: New Updates & Fixes - Jan 2026 (2026)

Imagine being able to play all your favorite Nintendo Switch games on the brand-new Switch 2. That's the promise Nintendo is making, and they're working hard to deliver! Nintendo has been tirelessly dedicated to making sure your existing library of Switch 1 games seamlessly transitions to their next-generation console, the Switch 2. While the Switch 2 launched with a large selection of original Switch titles ready to go, some games unfortunately experienced glitches or simply refused to launch. But don't worry, Nintendo hasn't given up! They're committed to ironing out all the wrinkles.

Today, January 13th, 2026, brings good news: another set of games has officially been declared fully compatible with the Switch 2! This means you can dive back into these adventures without a worry:

  • Pokémon Brilliant Diamond
  • Pokémon Shining Pearl

Now, here's the thing: backwards compatibility is rarely a perfect science. Nintendo is constantly monitoring and addressing issues as they arise. But here's where it gets controversial... Some gamers believe that Nintendo should have ensured every game was perfectly compatible at launch, arguing that it's a matter of respecting their existing customer base. Others are more forgiving, acknowledging the immense technical challenge involved in making hundreds of games, each with its own unique code, work flawlessly on new hardware. What's your take?

Unfortunately, it's not all good news. While some games are gaining compatibility, others are showing new issues. Nintendo has identified potential problems with the following title:

  • Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe (Users may experience audio problems in some areas)

And this is the part most people miss... Even games that are mostly compatible can have hidden glitches. It's a constant process of discovery and refinement. Will there ever be a point where Nintendo declares all Switch 1 games completely and utterly perfect on Switch 2? Or is it a never-ending quest for the ideal?

A huge thank you to Naetoru60 for the heads up and for keeping the community informed!

So, what do you think about Nintendo's approach to backwards compatibility? Are you satisfied with the progress they're making, or do you believe they could be doing more? What Switch 1 game are you most excited to play on the Switch 2? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comments below! Let's start a discussion.
