Tuna King's Record-Breaking Bluefin Tuna: A Tokyo Auction Extravaganza! (2026)

Imagine paying a staggering £2.4 million for a single fish! That's precisely what happened at a recent auction in Tokyo, where a sushi entrepreneur, known as the 'Tuna King,' Kiyoshi Kimura, broke records to acquire a giant bluefin tuna. This purchase highlights the extreme value placed on this delicacy.

Kimura shelled out a jaw-dropping 510.3 million yen (equivalent to £2.4 million) for the massive 243kg (536lbs) bluefin tuna. This magnificent specimen was caught off the northern coast of Japan.

"I was surprised at the price," Kimura admitted after the auction, which took place before dawn. He added, "I hope that by eating auspicious tuna, as many people as possible will feel energised."

But here's where it gets interesting: this price is the highest since comparable data started being collected in 1999. The previous record was 333.6 million yen for a 278kg bluefin in 2019, following the market's move to a more modern facility. Last year, the top bidder paid 207 million yen for a 276kg bluefin.

Shortly after the auction, the prized tuna was expertly butchered and transformed into sushi for Kimura's restaurant chain. A single roll of this exclusive sushi sold for around 500 yen (£2.40).

"I feel like I’ve begun the year in a good way after eating something so auspicious as the year starts," said Minami Sugiyama, a 19-year-old customer, from a Kimura restaurant in Tsukiji. Another customer, Kiyoshi Nishimura, a 40-year-old Shinto priest, agreed, stating, "Even without dipping it in soy sauce, there’s sweetness. And the richness, the texture – it just makes you feel happy."

Controversially, new year tunas fetched significantly lower prices during the pandemic as restaurants adjusted their operations. This raises the question: Is the price of these prized tunas justified, or is it a reflection of a specific cultural obsession? What do you think about the value placed on these fish, and how does it compare to other luxury goods? Share your thoughts in the comments!
